Process Work

Initial Sketch: For my initial design I intended to build something that elongated the vertical space in my room. The context I was designing for was an empty space next to my nightstand in my bedroom. I intended to design a shelving system that would allow for optimal storage and an opportunity to utilize vertical space for decoration.

Finalizing Design: My new design utilized a curved leg system to support both shelfs. The problem I had with this design is that it limited the opportunity for an elevated floating shelf. To combat this, I incorporated this new leg design into my initial sketch to create a more naturalistic version of the chest and floating shelf design.

Third iteration: The finalized form incorporates both aspects of my earlier iterations as it includes space for storage, a floating shelf above, and a more naturalistic form through the curved leg design. With the addition of sliding doors for the sideboard, hidden storage becomes possible while maintaining a focus on the overall form of the piece. My intended material choice was cherry at this stage as I was influenced by a mid century modern aesthetic knowing the cherry would eventually darken overtime.
