Teska Desk System

Made out of Baltic Birch Plywood constructed with domino joinery and assembled with screws

Description: The TESKA Desk System is a flat-packed furniture set utilizing friction-fit joinery and screws, allowing the set to be disassembled and easily movable. The system is designed for artists living in small urban environments where spatial constraints of small rooms make it difficult to work and live within a room. The framework is constructed with baltic birch plywood, allowing users to customize their desks. The planar surfaces (the desk and shelving) can be interchangeable as they sit into the framework without hardware via friction fit. Given this modularity, the desk system can scale up or down in width to fit the user’s room best. With the easel component on the legs, artists can easily paint in their rooms along with the foldable storage cart that extends the surface area of their workspace to allow for paint pallets and brushes to rest on.

How it works:

Function: The intended functionality of this desk allows the user to paint in their rooms through a compact design. Not only do the legs support the planar surfaces of the desk and shelving system, however, they also are able to support small and large canvases for painting. Each leg has identical holes spanning from the bottom to the top, enabling the user to paint on shorter and taller canvases along with adjusting the height allowing them to sit or stand while they paint.

The canvas is supported by plywood c-clamps that slide up and down each leg and are pinned by a dowel. Given the fact that each leg is identical, users are able to paint on large canvases up to 6-8 feet in width as the c-clamps can be taken off and placed on the widest leg extending the adjustable easel function.

The second part of the compact painting design is the mobile storage cart. With three drawers, the cart has plenty of storage space for articles/objects the user may want out of sight (paint, paint brushes, pallets, etc.). Given the small spaces the desk is designed for, the storage cart has a flip up component granting extended workspace for the user to place their paint, brushes, and pallets on. When not in use, the extended surface flips back into place and can easily be rolled back into the desk system.
